CAMPAIGNERS against the closure of Derbyshire care homes collected 501 signatures in two hours for a petition on Saturday.
Seventeen campaigners were in Ilkeston market place to launch the fight to save Derbyshire County Council residential care homes.
The county council is currently looking at plans to close homes in favour of adapted apartments and dementia units.
Helen Clark, chairwoman of Erewash Labour local government committee, said: "We hoped for a positive response but the public reaction to our petition was phenomenal.

"I would have been pleased if 100 people had signed up to the campaign, but 501 signatures in two hours was awesome."
There will be a public meeting on Wednesday, March 27, from 7pm to 8.30pm, at West Hallam Village Hall.
County council leader Andrew Lewer and Erewash MP Jessica Lee will be in attendance to hear people's concerns.
Labour Councillor Cheryl Pidgeon said: "Care for elderly people in Derbyshire is at crisis point."

Public Meeting

We have planned a Public Meeting on Wednesday March 27th at 7 p.m.
in the village hall in West Hallam (directly over the road from the Punchbowl Pub)

Over the next week we shall be issuing invitations to Derbyshire politicians to attend
and take questions.
We hope to have amongst others, M.P. Jessica Lee,Leader of the County Council Andrew Lewer,
and Carol Hart.

We hope this will be an opportunity for the public to express concerns and make their feelings
known.

Derbyshire Care Homes Campaign Progress to Date

We had a very brief airing on East Midlands Today.
DCC had a greater say, but at least we had a small window for our cause.
It was very frustrating to watch the deputy leader talking about choice for
the large group of older people who are to be denied choice & being unable to challenge
him. And again when he came up with the old chestnut that this is what people
want. It is not! There conclusions are drawn from an extremely small sample -
therefore such conclusions are unreliable and unrepresentative.

When doing a petition signing in Ilkeston market place on Sat a.m. Feb 16th
we had an excellent reaction. Out of approx 100 people I approached then, I had only 1 negative.
less than decided not to sign for various reasons.
A large number of people had seen the programme and been worried/ angry as a result, some
recalled seeing me even though my slot was only about 30 seconds.Shows the power of television

The report was written by a campaigning lawyer Yvonne Hossack

who fought to keep many care homes open.

The report looks at the effects of involuntary moves on the elderly,

as well as other aspects.

Section 4 is particularly interesting, as is 10.3
